Young Engineer Network – 150 members and growing

The NGN provides the next generation of engineers with the opportunity to learn from industry experts, network with other like-minded young professionals and contribute to CIGRE papers, conferences and workshops.

Attracting 150 members in around 18 months, the Australian NGN has demonstrated that there is very strong interest from young engineers to tap into all that CIGRE has to offer.

The NGN aims to help its members do this by:

  • Fostering collaboration between NGN members and senior professionals within CIGRE
  • Organising Q&A sessions  between experienced senior professionals and NGN members
  • Running webinars on various power system topics exclusively for NGN members.  Given the challenges faced with approving non-work related travel, the NGN sees webinars as a great way of sharing information with a large audience
  • Archiving Q&A session notes, webinars and technical material on the NGN website for viewing by NGN members - http://www.cigrengn.org.au
  • Facilitating involvement in the CIGRE Study Committee and Working Group for NGN members - the ultimate goal being to provide NGN members with a pathway into CIGRE's extensive technical activities
  • Co-hosting events with non-CIGRE organisations such as IEEE and the Australian Power Institute

The NGN offers a great way to develop the careers of young professionals by:

  • Furthering technical knowledge and understanding of subject matter
  • Providing networking opportunities, not only between young professionals, but also experienced senior professionals
  • Providing awareness of industry challenges and how to address these challenges through the various Working Groups
  • Providing unlimited online access to over 8,000 CIGRE technical papers and publications dating back as far as the 1930s

Given CIGRE's international nature, the Australian NGN has established links with overseas NGNs and some of its members now have the opportunity to participate in international working groups and committees. Furthermore, the Australian National Committee of CIGRE provides assistance via a scholarship for two NGN members to attend the biennial CIGRE Paris session. This is a great opportunity for these young engineers to develop relationships with their overseas counterparts.

Membership of the NGN is free to employees of member companies and associations.

Further information and details on how to signup can be found on the NGN website.  The NGN can be contacted by email if you have any questions.
