CIGRE Green Books

Green Books are relatively new additions to CIGRE’s vast library of technical information.  These are state of the art, reference publications that will eventually encompass all the subjects covered by CIGRE and its Study Committees. Drawing on all the existing Technical Brochures and other relevant publications for a particular domain of work, Green Books consolidate this information into a single book.

These books are recognised by the engineering community as the top reference publications in their fields and are available for purchase at e-cigre.orgMembers should contact publications @cigre.org to get a 40% discount coupon for the digital version of a Green Book on Springer.com.

All the GREEN Books are available for purchase on the e-cigre site and can be accessed HERE

This article provides a brief summary of the topics covered in each of the Green Books that have been published so far.  There are also a number of additional books that are currently being produced and the article will be updated when they are published.

This Green Book commences with an historical flashback and then covers all aspects of overhead transmission lines.  These include: planning and management concepts, electrical and mechanical considerations, influence of the weather and the environment, detailed design of all line components, construction and maintenance aspects, line optimization and asset management.  The timely comparison between overhead lines and underground cables is also covered. More than 50 internationally recognized experts have contributed to the completion of this substantial task.  The information will be an invaluable reference for the practicing engineer, academia and decision makers.

This handbook offers the complete knowledge of high voltage substations from their design and construction to their maintenance and ongoing management over the entire asset life cycle. The book covers a range of topologies, including Air-Insulated, Gas-Insulated and Mixed Technology Switchgear Substations together with essential secondary systems.  Additionally specialized substations such as ultra high voltage, offshore substations for wind power plants and the use of gas-insulated lines are included. Information for increased reliability and availability, asset management, environmental management aspects, and the adoption of appropriate technological advances in equipment and systems in substations are also provided. The book was written by more than 30 experts from around the world and assembled through CIGRE Study Committee B3. Although there are other works containing references to Substations, this book provides a complete overview of the topic in one book as a valuable reference

This CIGRE Green Book provides the entire know-how about switches in a high voltage system. The switching equipment includes circuit breakers, vacuum interrupters, disconnecting switches, and earthing switches used in AC & DC transmission and distribution systems. The Green book describes the different switching equipment and their roles in the power systems. It explains the fundamental switching behaviors in power systems. DC circuit breakers, controlled switching, fault current limiting devices and future technologies are also covered.  The book draws on the outstanding practical knowledge of numerous experts from CIGRE Study committee A3 and was collected by Dr. Hiroki Ito.   It is targeted at practitioners, students and relevant electrical industries

This Green Book offers numerical models of wind-induced aeolian vibrations and sub-span oscillations of overhead line conductors. It highlights what can be expected from numerical models regarding conductor vibrations.  Assessment of the aeolian vibration condition of particular lines, with conductors whose mechanical properties are poorly defined, or with special terrain conditions, may require field measurements.   Analytical methods based on the Energy Balance Principle and shaker-based technology can provide a useful tool to design damping systems for the protection of single conductors against aeolian vibrations.  The work reports the state of the art for professionals regarding aeolian vibrations and subspan oscillations modeling.

utility

This Green Book begins by addressing the specification and provision of communication services in the context of operational applications for electrical power utilities, before subsequently providing guidelines on the deployment or transformation of networks to deliver these specific communication services. It also demonstrates how these networks and their services can be monitored, operated, and maintained to ensure that the requisite high level of service quality is consistently achieved.

 access

The purpose of this Reference Book is to provide information based on the work completed by many experts in CIGRE Study Committee B1 Working Groups, Task Forces, Joint Working Groups and Joint Task Forces in the past 20 years and to publish unbiased recommendations and guidelines from CIGRE for design, installation and testing accessories for HV extruded cables
